Structuralist Logic: Implications, Inferences, and Consequences
نویسنده
چکیده
On a structuralist account of logic, the logical operators, as well as modal operators are defined by the specific ways that they interact with respect to implication. As a consequence, the same logical operator (conjunction, negation etc.) can appear to be very different with a variation in the implication relation of a structure. We illustrate this idea by showing that certain operators that are usually regarded as extra-logical concepts (Tarskian algebraic operations on theories, mereological sum, products and negates of individuals, intuitionistic operations on mathematical problems, epistemic operations on certain belief states) are simply the logical operators that are deployed in different implication structures. That makes certain logical notions more omnipresent than one would think. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000). Primary 03B22; Secondary 03B20, 03B42, 03B60.

Scientific Theories and the Computational Theory of Perceptions - A Structuralist View Including Fuzzy Sets
Fuzzy Logic, Computing with words, and the Computational Theory of Preceptions build a stack of methodologies to help bridge the gap between systems and phenomena in reality and scientific theories. Bridging this gap has been a problem in all philosophical approaches, and the so-called structuralist view of theories in one that was established in the 20 century. In this paper we present a “fuzz...
متن کاملMathematical Platonism: from objects to patterns
The aim of this paper is to reveal the tacit assumptions of the logicist and structuralist theories on the nature of cardinal numbers. The privileged background theory is the representational theory of language with its main conjecture about necessary correspondence between metaphysical structure of reality and logical structure of language. In such a theory of language we meet a number of thes...
متن کاملConstructivist and structuralist foundations: Bishop's and Lawvere's theories of sets
Bishop’s informal set theory is briefly discussed and compared to Lawvere’s Elementary Theory of the Category of Sets (ETCS). We then present a constructive and predicative version of ETCS, whose standard model is based on the constructive type theory of Martin-Löf. The theory, CETCS, provides a structuralist foundation for constructive mathematics in the style of Bishop. Mathematics Subject Cl...
متن کاملAesthetic implications of the eco - structuralist process
This article explores the aesthetic implications of ecostructuralism. Eco-structuralism is a method of music composition that utilises the sonic features of natural sounds as structural elements in new compositions. This paper places eco-structuralism within an aesthetic and analytical framework. It explores views of aesthetics and nature and discusses how eco-structuralism is positioned in rel...
متن کاملRewriting with Linear Inferences in Propositional Logic
Linear inferences are sound implications of propositional logic where each variable appears exactly once in the premiss and conclusion. We consider a specific set of these inferences, MS, first studied by Straßburger, corresponding to the logical rules in deep inference proof theory. Despite previous results characterising the individual rules of MS, we show that there is no polynomial-time cha...
